What's GROWING on? A look at Bulbapedia's newest additions - Special Edition: Events, Exhibits, and Experiences
The World is Waiting
It is now one month since the Pokémon 2024 World Championships, and we're still feeling the excitement! Featuring the cutest Pikachu wearing swim gear, this year's event was in Honolulu, Hawai'i, held in the state for fourth time. Players and fans all around the world came to compete, but viewers at home even had the chance to participate themselves! A variety of event distributions, from Tomoya Ogawa's Sylveon to the special Costumed Pikachu in Pokémon GO, were made available to everyone around the globe! In addition to our post-event coverage on the encyclopedia written by our dedicated contributors, you can also re-live the excitement by re-reading the Day 1, Day 2, and Finals Bulbanews coverage by our very own @radiomochi! Will we see your name on the 2025 World Championships page next year?
Blast from the Past
Before the modern-day tournaments we know and love, there were the 2002 Pokémon World Championships. Hosted by Wizards of the Coast, the event held at the Seattle Convention Center, in Seattle, United States, on August 3-4, 2002. It was the only World Championship hosted by Wizards, and after learning the details of Wizards' "Scorched Earth Mode", you'll understand why. The event used the Neo Genesis-onwards Modified Format, and was an invitation only contest with two age brackets; 10 and Under & 11 to 14. Now after 22 years, you too can learn all about the storied history of this Pokémon event, thanks to staff member Rustle!
What do Sobble, Mega Ampharos, and Icicle Crash have in common? They have all been represented in fine art, of course! Those who are familiar with POKÉMON X KOGEI will know all about the 70+ works of art by over 20 skilled artisans, traveling the country of Japan and beyond. The art exhibit is divided into three collections: Appearance--Approach!, Stories--Jump In!, and Life--Cherish!. From kimonos and Pikachu lace, to jewelry boxes and metal-work statues, there is an exhibit for everyone, with new pieces coming all the time!
While we can't expect everyone to make the trip to Japan (the next location is Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo, from November to February by the way), feel free to browse our Bulbapedia coverage on the subject, written by our very own Chao! You won't want to miss it!
A Ripple in Time
Art enthusiasts are eating good this August, with the double dose of art collaborations documented by Chao. Next on our list is the Daniel Arsham × Pokémon, a collaboration between American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham and The Pokémon Company. It consists of art exhibits held in Japan, the United States, and China, as well as various lines of merchandise inspired by the artworks. You can read all about the collaboration, the exhibits, the merchandise, the catalogue, and the animated short on our dedicated page here. But before you go, please read what Daniel Arsham himself had to say on the exhibit:
Have you heard of the Pokémon Fossil Museum? It's a traveling paleontology exhibit in Japan, showcasing various Pokémon fossils next to their real-world inspirations. Visitors can learn about both Pokémon lore and real-world science - a win-win! The exhibit started in 2021, currently in the Gifu Prefectural Museum until October 27, 2024. And here's a piece of trivia for you: Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, and Antique Old Amber from the Pokémon Card 151 TCG expansion were first discovered in person at the museum!
Read up on our current coverage on the Bulbapedia article thanks to staff paleontologists Chao and Landfish7. We've only scratched the surface on this topic, so if you have some additional discoveries to share, make an account and start contributing today!
